        About Faro

Faro is located in the heart of the Algarve region and with a car hire in Faro, you can skip a day at the nearest beach and explore the wild nature and secluded Portuguese beaches. Faro can be described as a lively city that is full of cafes, restaurants, bars and other fun social and also cultural places. However, Faro is a means to an end for many travellers, as its airport is the only one connecting the rest of Europe to the south of Portugal. If you are not starting your Portugal road trip with a car rental in Lisbon, the most sensible way to arrive is via Faro Airport. Most visitors with a car rental at Faro Airport, pick up their car and make their way to their holiday in other cities in the Algarve region. But we say, do not be like the masses and give this city a chance!

Faro has a lot to offer and if you rent a car, you will exhaust all the possibilities. Faro's history and amazing sights will keep you busy during the day as you stroll around, the numerous cafes and restaurants will let you relax as the sun goes down. Stroll through the town centre and see the amazing architecture, sunbathe on the endless beaches and maybe even take a boat trip to the wildlife sanctuary Ria Formosa. And because of its ideal location, trips to nearby towns and other captivating places in the Algarve region are easy by car. If you are considering car hire in Faro, you will find that it is easy and there are many options to choose from.

If you have never been to Portugal or the Algarve region, this part of the world will immediately captivate you. Due to the mild winters, the south of Portugal is a perfect holiday destination at any time of year - you'll find peace and warmth in winter when the sun is high. If you are looking for where to spend your December holidays - the Algarve is generally a great destination for Christmas and New Year's Eve - especially if you are a sea and beach lover, you'll get your share of windy and salty air here, combined with the cinnamon scents of the desserts of Portuguese Christmas. Especially with a car rental in Faro, you will have an unforgettable December.
With car hire in Faro, the distances become bearable and if you do not feel like spending the day on the busy beaches, make the most of the day and visit the beautiful and tranquil Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa or any other place that captures your attention in the Faro area.

When it comes to food, Portugal is the place to be. The prices are reasonable and the quality is top-notch. Seafood definitely deserves your attention since Portugal is surrounded by the ocean. If you are familiar with cod, try the traditional dishes with bacalao, prepared in a thousand different ways. And if you have a sweet tooth, seek out the nearest bar and ask for a Pastel de Nata, a delicious recipe made by the nuns of Belem. It's a pancake batter dusted with sugar and cinnamon.
In spring, temperatures can get quite high and the bravest tourists already find the courage to swim in the sea. However, when you travel to the west, the water becomes colder as the cold ocean water mixes with the Mediterranean Sea. Summers are crowded and hot and many find the legions of tourists unappealing, but do not be disappointed too soon - the Algarve region is big and the pond gets even bigger if you count the Alentejo region.

Basic info and car hire in Faro

        • Location: Algarve region, in the very South of Portugal
        • Population: 41,335 (2021)
        • Official language: Portuguese
        • Currency: Euro (€)
        • Weather: The south of Portugal has a typical hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and sunny (80 - 86 °F / 27 - 30 °C), while autumns and winters are mild (46 - 62 °F / 8 - 17 °C). The south of Portugal is a great, but quite underrated, year-round destination that can re-energise you with sunny days in winter. If you are lucky, the swimming season can last into November, and by April temperatures can rise again to welcome you. If swimming is not your priority, the Algarve is just perfect for walking along the coast, and with a car hire in Faro, it's easy to explore the sleepy villages. And when you stop off, be sure to breathe in the fresh sea air. All of this is made easy with a car rental in Faro. Plus, during the off-season, prices drop, making some of the poshest accommodations very affordable. An opportunity not to be missed!
        • Holidays in Faro: Portugal, like the rest of the European countries, has the most Christian holidays off work. Car rental agencies in Faro are usually open regardless of holidays, but if you are on vacation you may need a supermarket, pharmacy, etc. Good Friday in April along with Freedom Day and Labor Day in May is a popular non-working day for many Portuguese. Portugal Day and Corpus Christi in June are also public holidays, and if you are in Portugal in August, the 15th is Assumption Day, so keep that in mind when you are heading to the nearest store. Click here for a full list of public holidays in Portugal.
        • Internet coverage: Most hotels, bars, restaurants and cafés offer Wi-Fi. However, if you’ll be engaging yourself with a car hire in Faro, chances are you’ll need a good and fast connection during the trip. Vodafone is one of the best providers of mobile data transfers, and MEO and NOS are also stated as having good speed and great coverage. If you’re thinking of a longer stay in Portugal, maybe buying a national SIM card is your best option. And, if you’re a UK resident, Three’s Feel at home package has a great offer for someone who’s a regular traveller.
        • Road conditions: Portuguese roads are well maintained, and as frost and snow are rare conditions, especially in the Portuguese South, you will not encounter any greater complications with your rented car in Faro, not even in winter. • Road Toll in Portugal: With a car rental in Faro, you will want to know more about the Portuguese toll system. Road tolls in Portugal can be a bit disconcerting, especially for a tourist in Portugal. But do not let it scare you too much, with the right steps and reading in advance of your trip, it's all manageable! For example, an Electronic Collection toll has recently been introduced in Portugal, unfortunately, it has not been introduced on all roads. On some roads, you will still find the old manned system where the toll is paid as you drive (cash, coins, credit cards as well as prepaid cards are accepted). These roads are well signposted with a large green post with an angled "V" sign (Via Verde), granting a fast Via Verde lane for anyone with a Via Verde toll system. On the other hand, the roads where tolls are collected electronically are not as well marked and in most cases, you will not realize you are on one until you find yourself driving under a row of cameras. Also, remember that the Via Verde passing lane system works on the Electronic Toll Roads but EasyTOLL, TOLLCard and TOLLService (all Electronic Road systems) do not work on the Via Verde as these are separate systems. Read more about the Portuguese tolling system or ask your car hire supplier in Faro about the road toll system.
        • Car hire in Faro: Prices vary but are roughly 5 – 14 £ / day (5 – 15 € / day). Most visitors collect their rental car at Faro Airport, also known as Algarve Airport, only 2.5 mi (4 km) west of Faro. Find a perfect car rental in Faro.

(It is advisable to purchase Orbit Car Hire Premium Coverage, which will cover your car rental in Faro for any inconveniences on the road. If this is your first time renting a car, there are several rules you must know before picking up the vehicle at the car rental in Faro. A credit card, along with your passport, driver’s license and excess coverage at the counter is something you should not forget. The credit card holder should be the same as the main driver, otherwise, the agency will make you purchase the additional driver permission. Insurance can be purchased at the counter; however, the price will be 2 to 3 times higher than the excess cover offered by Orbit Car Hire.

        What to see in Faro

Visitors usually start their exploration of Faro with the laid-back plaza, Jardim Manuel Bivar. Here you can spend some time watching the locals play a game of chess or cards, with Faro's beautiful marina in the background. Just a stone's throw from the square is the wonderful gateway, Arco da Vila. This arched monument is the dramatic entrance leading into the charming old town, which was surrounded by a Roman wall built in the 9th century. Within the city, walls are pretty cafes and narrow cobbled streets where children still play hide and seek. Faro's tourist information centre is located right next to the Arco da Vila gate, where you can get useful information and a free map of the city. A useful piece of information for anyone with a rental car in Faro is that the old town is mainly a pedestrian zone and parking your vehicle on the street (or in the wrong place) can end up in a fine. Avoid the inconvenience and leave the rental car at your hotel or find a parking spot outside the city walls. Once you are on inside the walls, you'll find that the city of Faro is peaceful and full of narrow, cobbled streets (women in high heels should be extra careful here) and a row of colourful houses that make the sight even prettier.

Drive your rental car around Faro

Faro is a charming, quirky city, but hopefully, you'll have time to explore the region around Faro. If you are looking for a shorter getaway, Praia do Ancao (12mi / 20km), Praia do Loulé Velho (15mi / 25km), Praia da Falesia (18mi / 30km) or Praia de Marinha (37mi / 60km) are great alternatives to the more remote locations, but still not easy to get to unless you opt for car rental in Faro.

If you want it all (i.e. beaches, vibrant nightlife and leisurely city walks) but still are not willing to drive too far from Faro, head to the town of Albufeira (28mi / 45km). Car rental in Faro makes your trip free from public transport schedules.

East of Faro, discover the peaceful town of Tavira (25mi / 40km), where you can have your beach days and your city nights, along with plenty of exploring in between. Nearby is the picturesque fishing village of Santa Luzia.

If you are up for some real driving, you can visit Spain from Faro and be there within 45 minutes. Or you can opt for a road trip through Portugal - do not miss it, Portugal is a country with great food and a touch of gloom that you can feel in Fado, the traditional Portuguese music. If you are interested in Fado, you should visit Fado street in Lisbon or at least the tour of the world-famous singer Mariza (she is originally from Portuguese Mozambique), which brings a piece of Portugal to your hometown.

Back to the Portuguese road trip idea - if you have a fortnight's vacation or more, we definitely recommend getting a hire car in Faro and driving slowly towards Lisbon. Portugal has more than 500km of coastline and it would be a shame to limit your stay to just the Algarve. It is understandable that you need to relax in a resort hotel every now and then, but not to explore the huge Portuguese beaches and rich cities (Lisbon, Porto, Evora, ...) that would leave Portugal undiscovered.

So, start the engine and ...If you love beaches, cliffs and unspoiled nature, drive west of Faro to Odeceixe (about 75mi / 120km) in the municipality of Aljezur, part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast. This part of the Algarve will captivate you with the vastness of the beaches and the wildness of the Atlantic Ocean. The weather is a bit windier and you will find many wave surfers here. And most importantly - this part of the coast is generally overlooked by tourists and is still in the shadow of the Algarve.

From the Costa Alentejana and Vicentina, you can head north and visit Comporta (approx 125 mi / 200km) where you will find plenty of nature and an active day out. From Comporta it's a stone's throw to Setúbal where you can visit the Arrabida Nature Park, or if food and gastronomy are your things, visit the pretty covered market Mercado do Livramento where you can see all the fresh produce of Portuguese cuisine. From Setúbal, drive past the Santuário de Cristo Rei, a statue of Jesus whose construction was inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. The statue overlooks the city of Lisbon and was meant to protect the city during World War II.

To get to the city of Lisbon, cross the Tagus River via either the Vasco da Gamma Bridge or the 25 de Abril Bridge. The second bridge is a suspension bridge, older and amazingly similar to the San Francisco Golden Gate. If you cross the river at the Vasco da Gamma bridge, you will be near the neighbourhood EXPO, which is full of modern architecture. Once in Lisbon, you'll be a busy bee; the city centre takes time to explore, and you definitely should not miss a visit to the walled Moorish town of Sintra and the resort town of Cascais, the pride of the Portuguese Royal Family the late 19th century. Do not leave Cascais without setting foot in the Pastelaria de Belem - a place where the heavenly delicious Pasteis de Nata comes from. We recommend a stay of at least 3 days to get to know Lisbon better.

From Lisbon, you can take your Faro car rental to Evora, a walled city with exceptionally beautiful cobblestone streets, old churches and city gates. You can explore the verdant Portuguese countryside where you may stumble across a gipsy caravan.

If wave surfing, windsurfing or kiteboarding is what you want to experience in Portugal, head to Peniche. Wide beaches, an international vibe and wonderful weather conditions for all outdoor activities. From Peniche, head to Porto, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive. Porto, like Lisbon, is again a world apart. To explore all that Porto has to offer, you would need weeks. However, in a three-day stay in Porto, you can visit the Douro Valley, where some of the best Port wines are made, walk the city streets and enter the old wine cellars. In Porto, you'll notice the country's different geology - Porto is darker compared to Lisbon (where white limestone is found) and southern Portugal due to the granite beneath the surface. Porto's churches, cathedrals and cobblestone streets are all made from granite quarried nearby. You'll also notice it on the beaches, where the fine gold sand is replaced by small grains of quartz. Head to Miramar and admire the Capela do Senhor da Pedra, a tiny chapel on the rocks surrounded by the sea, and take a walk along the coast. If you decide to take a road trip in Portugal, you can start your car rental in Faro and drop off the car in Porto to finish your trip in the north of Portugal. However, it is also possible to do a round trip and end your car hire in Faro, where you started. It all depends on how much time you have (you can save time by dropping the car off in Porto) and how much money you have (it will cost you a little more if the drop-off is not in the same place as the pick-up). It's up to you!

This absolutely wild west coast is the least developed region of Portugal, which makes it all the more attractive in the eyes of a traveller who wants to see an unknown part of the country. Freshly caught seafood and a range of options for outdoor sporting activities are not the only things that make this region a great destination. Exploring Faro

Where to eat, drink and party in Faro

Due to its location by the sea, you will definitely find fish and other seafood on every menu in Faro. The specialities of the area are grilled sardines and bacalhau, cod in every imaginable preparation. Other common regional dishes include salads, omelettes, meat dishes like febras or thin slices of pork, and chicken with Piri-Piri chillies. Finish the meal with an order of medronho, a local spirit that is both fruity and strong. In general, Portugal has great cuisine and there is something for everyone. If you are a seafood lover, Portugal will turn out to be your favourite destination. You can find everything from fine dining restaurants to fast-food restaurants that are usually open until 12 at night. In Faro, you will find Jumbo and Pingo Doce supermarkets as well as a fantastic Mercado Municipal in the centre of Faro with fish and other fresh produce markets. Again, do not miss trying the Pasteis de Belem, a delicious custard pastry that originated in Cascais, but you can try their commercial version, called Pasties de Nata, in almost any bar along with a coffee. And since you are in the Mediterranean, the coffee should understandably be a strong espresso. Portugal's traditional wines include Moscatel, a sweet desert white wine from the Setúbal peninsula, and of course the famous Port, which comes from northern Portugal, Douro Region to be precise.

Pastries and desserts are a chapter all their own in Portugal. Bakeries can be found on every corner and are called pastelerias, where you can try all the different sweets soaked with Portuguese tradition. In the Middle Ages, nuns and monks sold sweets made mostly from egg yolks. A strong nautical force, Portuguese cuisine exerted an influence on many faraway places, such as Brazil and Japan, where the Portuguese introduced refined sugar to Japanese gentlemen (leading to the colourful and delicious wagashi bites served with tea).
